Donal M. Kelly

PhD, European Trade Mark and Design Attorney, PgD (Commercial Intellectual Property)

Donal deals primarily with patent issues, across a range of areas. His role addresses the acquisition and enforcement of intellectual property rights on behalf of both individual inventors and large organisations, specifically in the fields of biomedical and biological sciences. He joined FRKelly in 2007.

Having been awarded an honours degree in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics from University College Dublin, Donal then completed a doctorate in Molecular Oncology in the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at the Queen's University of Belfast.

The focus of his research related to the interaction of pro-survival and pro-apoptotic signalling pathways in human cancer, and involved an integrated relationship with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. In particular, the study involved delineating the molecular mechanism underlying the response of human cancer cells to target-selective cancer therapeutics. The findings of this research have been published in a number of high-impact peer-reviewed journals. Donal has experience in a number of scientific technology areas, including cell culture and animal models; DNA, RNA, and protein isolation; Flow Cytometry; Western Blotting; immunoprecipitation; kinase assays, Real-Time Quantitative PCR (Q-PCR), siRNA; cell transfection; and microarray technology.

Donal has also been awarded a PgD with distinction from the Nottingham Law School of Nottingham Trent University, providing him with insight into the law and practice underlying the translation of intellectual property into a commercial prospect; and can offer guidance on the key aspects to deriving commercial and economic benefit from intellectual property.

Donal is based in our Dublin Office.
