Maura O’Connell
Ph. D., European Patent Attorney, Community Trade Mark Attorney.
Maura is a Registered Patent & Trade Mark Agent, a European Patent Attorney and a Community Trade Mark Attorney. She has considerable experience in general Intellectual Property practice, (Patents, Trade Marks and Designs) primarily in general, chemical and clinical fields, including broad experience in oral hearings, oppositions and appeals both at the European Patent Office and at the National Irish Patents Office.
Maura has been with FRKelly since 1987 and she handles the chemical and pharmaceutical work both at home and abroad for several of the larger indigenous Irish companies and universities. She also handles European chemical and pharmaceutical work for international companies. Whilst her specialist expertise is in biochemistry/chemistry, she has a wide ranging interest in, and practical experience with, the pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnological areas in general. She received an Honours Bachelor in Science Degree majoring in Biochemistry (1978) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1984) from the National University of Ireland. Her thesis explored the relationship between the response of human breast cancer patients to endocrine therapy and various biochemical and histological markers in the cancer sample itself, in order to identify a marker that would predict response to endocrine therapy.
Before joining the firm, she was involved in post-doctoral research work in the clinical/biochemical field. Her post-doctoral work was carried out in a clinical setting and involved co-ordinating, supervising and providing research laboratory support services for a large diabetology practice.
Maura takes an active interest in strategies around commercialisation of her client's Intellectual Property.
