Shane SmythManaging Partner

Shane was appointed as Managing Partner at FRKelly on 1 February 2008 and has been a Partner since 1989. He is the current Chairman of the Designs Committee with The Irish Association of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and was Chairman of the Trade Marks Committee during the passage of the Trade Marks Act, 1996.
Shane has degrees from both Trinity College (BSc Computer Science) and University College Dublin (BCL). He is a regular guest lecturer on computer law and intellectual property for both universities and is frequently invited to speak at international conferences, business seminars and workshops.
He is the co-author of the current leading authority among Irish legal textbooks on Irish Intellectual Property, Intellectual Property Law in Ireland, published by Tottel.
Shane was also a member of The Scientific Committee responsible for advising the EU Commission regarding the registration of geographical indications of origin. He is a Council Member of AIPPI (Irish Group), MARQUES (The Association of European Trade Mark Owners) and a Committee Member of ECTA (European Communities Trade Mark Association).
Shane has a specialist interest in licensing and assignment of intellectual property and is a leading authority on design and copyright matters. While his client base has a local and international reach, he is closely involved in international intellectual property protection for indigenous Irish companies.
